President's Message
Kevin Hostler, President and CEO
Government outreach, declining throughput challenges
This
spring, Alyeska sent employees to Juneau to meet with lawmakers
at the Capital. This was the third year we have invested in this
program. For our people, it is a chance to see Alaska politics
up close, to meet their elected officials, and to experience our
state capitol. For our legislators, it is an opportunity to
learn about the Trans Alaska Pipeline System from front-line
employees.
While conversations with legislators varied, most of the
lawmakers heard a similar message: Crude oil throughput on TAPS
is at about 680,000 barrels a day, down from the peak of 2.1
million barrels in 1988. Because of that, Alyeska is facing
technical and operational challenges. Realizing how critical the
pipeline is to all Alaskans, Alyeska is addressing those
challenges head-on, and working creatively to develop solutions
to keep us viable now and for years to come.
All Alaskans should understand that the ongoing safe operation
of TAPS is critical to our state’s financial health. This issue
cannot be ignored. Legislators heard this message when we sat
down with them in Juneau, and as a company, we will continue to
do what we can to educate the public on this important topic so
that TAPS can continue to benefit Alaskans and contribute to our
nation’s energy infrastructure.
